Regularly replacing your furnace filter is a simple yet crucial maintenance task that can help ensure the efficient operation of your heating system and improve indoor air quality. A clean filter allows proper airflow, prevents dust and debris from circulating throughout your home, and can even extend the lifespan of your furnace. While it may seem intimidating at first, replacing a furnace filter is actually a straightforward process that you can easily tackle on your own. In this guide, we'll walk you through the steps to replace your furnace filter, empowering you to keep your heating system running smoothly and your indoor air clean.
Where can I find the furnace filter?
Most furnaces are centrally located within a home, typically housed in a utility closet or in the basement. For properties without a basement, the furnace may be located in a crawl space or the attic.
The air filter is usually situated within the blower compartment, accessible via a metal door or hatch on the lower half of the furnace. Alternatively, it might be in a sliding compartment near the air handler component or on a rack positioned on the side of the furnace.
How To Replace Furnace Filter?
Step #1 - Double Check Filter Size:
Before purchasing a new filter, double check the size of your existing filter. Furnace filters come in various sizes, so it's essential to ensure you get the correct size to fit your furnace.
Step #2 - Remove Door from Furnace:
Locate the access door to your furnace. Depending on the type of furnace you have, the access door may be located on the front, side, or top of the unit. Use caution when opening the door, as there may be sharp edges.
Step #3 - Remove Old Filter:
Once the door is open, locate the existing filter inside the furnace. Carefully slide the old filter out of its slot, taking note of its orientation.
Step #4 - Insert New Filter (Be Careful of Airflow Direction):
Before inserting the new filter, take note of the airflow direction indicated on the filter frame. This direction is crucial for proper filter installation. Slide the new filter into the slot, ensuring it fits snugly and securely.
Step #5 - Replace Door, Secure in Place:
After inserting the new filter, replace the access door to the furnace and secure it in place. Ensure that the door is properly aligned and securely closed to prevent air leaks.
